about

More transfers from cassette. These selections from late-1986, working on MESMERIZED BY THE SIRENS

1. Sawdust Scatter (demo) — If I remember correctly, this is the only song where a melody popped into my head while I was doing something completely not-music-related. It came to me in my dorm room, and here I’m capturing it so I wouldn't forget it. I am playing live on my Poly-61 to a Dr Rhythm click track. It doesn’t have quite all the melodies that appear in the final version, but many of them.

2. A bit like Sawdust — I hear this sounding a bit like I was trying to capture the mood of Sawdust Scatter. Maybe I was trying to think of additional parts. Or maybe I'm completely wrong! : )

3. Seireenien (part 1 isolated) — This is the background track from the first part of Seireenien Lumoama. It’s the same length as it plays in the actual song, so it’s possible this was a transfer from the 8-track to cassette, so I could listen to it in my room (I was recording in Chapman College’s small music studio in the comm department.) Or maybe I recorded it to this cassette in my dorm and then transferred it to the 8-track master?

4 Seireenien Piano (rehearsal room) — At night I’d sneak into one of the music department's rehearsal rooms to record their piano. Usually I’d play around until I got some notes I’d like and then I’d record following a click track (which you can hear a bit). I recorded on a cassette tape and later rolled a portion of this performance onto the 8-track 1/2-master. (As you can tell from these notes, I had no worry about recording quality back in those days.)

5 Piano 1986 — Another piano piece in the rehearsal room. Not used.

6. Synth song — not used

7. Seireenien lumoama (pt3 extended) — I found this on DAT#4 which is from 1992. It’s an extended version of the 3rd part of “Seireenien lumoama.” It's not a different recording, I did this by starting out soloing the nature-sounds then running the mix of part 3, with a cross-fade back onto itself at 1:50. ••••••• I'm gonna guess I ran the mix of the two segments (0:00->1:50 & 1:50—>end) to 2-track (probably not cassette) and then rolling each back onto the 8-track to do a cross-fade. Overall the sound quality isn’t too noisy. ••••••• Dat#4 is from 1992 (with 4/18 next to this track, the first on the DAT). I find it somewhat unlikely (but not impossible) that I created this during mixing THIS LUSH GARDEN WITHIN. Seems more likely I did it back at the studio at Chapman College in 1987 after the album was finished..... and in '92 dubbed it to DAT possibly so I could erase the 1/2-inch tape, as I haven’t seen a version of this on any of the 8-track tapes from either Mesmerized or LUSH GARDEN era.
