about

A 1987 live performance from Doppler Shift, my space rock band with Walter Holland (formerly of Amber Route.) Wow! I love hearing this set all these years later. Walter's guitar parts are so beautiful...

Even though I previously posted a much-better-recorded concert from KSBR blacktapeforabluegirl.bandcamp.com/album/live-ksbr-1987 ... I wanted to share this with you because it’s a unique show. At this one we performed around 50% different material, covered Pink Floyd and Tangerine Dream songs, and this is probably the only recording of Black Tape For A Blue Girl’s “The Rope” with Richard Watson (formerly of Amber Route) playing live clarinet. Richard is on some of the other tracks as well.

We performed outdoor after dark near Chapman College’s art department where Walter was a professor and I was a student. I remember it was cool but not cold, and the audience was very chilled out sitting on the grass, and maybe on some concrete benches.

This show was recorded by a guy in the audience Dya Singh; It’s kinda mushed-sounding, but after a track or two, my ears adjust to the sound quality and I enjoy the performance.

There's a third Doppler Shift concert, “Live at the Guggenheim” (Chapman College’s art gallery.) Someday we'll find that tape as I think we recorded it to stereo 1/4-inch 2-track).

Enjoy some space music on the green….

- Sam + Walter
