about

DAT#23 COMMENTS:

I have not included the first 5 tracks. They were from '97 and not part of the AFLAME album. There are skips in the numbering (14, 16, 20). Those aren't tracks I failed to include, they were blank spots on the DAT that mistakenly got numbered.

I went to my spiral notebook and got dates for when I started each track. Aside from 23-13, 23-15, 23-17, these were recorded to the DAT as I wrote them. These are rough mixes to listen to later so I could hear what I had written. I was working fast; as far as I can tell, these weren't transferred to the 8-track tape. This is right from the synths, with the ESQ-1 controlling the EMAX and Poly-61. I am guessing I created each track in one sitting, sometimes more than one in a day.

I find it really interesting to hear the order I created the songs, completely random jumping from style to style. Also, interesting: how fast I was working. The beginning of March was very productive. The stuff at the end of this tape, not so much.

Where it says "Sequence #5" that's the ESQ-1 sequence number. These are pieces I don't think I ever came back to (we'll see on the next DAT.) DAT23-19 & DAT23-20 are based on samples from a middle-eastern music CD; I didn't plan to use it as I didn't have clearance. My thought was I could use it to build a rhythm, and then delete all the sampled bits, but I never went further I don't think.

DAT#24 COMMENTS:
⭕ = this is the final mix that's on the album, minus the mastering.

DAT#25 COMMENTS:

DAT25-10 It looks like I recorded Juliana playing guitar, sampled it, and then added it later to "As one aflame part 1"
DAT25-11&12 My guess is when Julianna was in town to record, I worked out some chords for “Given” and recorded them to DAT. Then I sampled them into the EMAX and sequenced them with the ESQ-1 into the song you know. The guitar is very buried, and sort of processed in the mix. I suspect Julianna came back a 2nd time to record the vocals.... we'll see on DAT#26.
