about

These are my DAT mixes for 1991’s A CHAOS OF DESIRE.

Dates on the tapes:
DAT 1/1990 April 30-June 13
DAT 2/1990 June 8-15
DAT 3/1990 June 9-11

The album was mixed 6+ months before it was released. I remember I was disappointed with my mixes, and put them aside and got busy doing computer graphic work. When I came back to them later (with less artist-angst) I thought, “Aw, they’re not that bad. Ok, let’d do this.”

DAT 1 begins with three April 30th mixes of “the turbulence and the torment” which wasn’t released until 1993's THIS LUSH GARDEN WITHIN.

The songs are arranged in album order, with the multiple versions in the chronological order I mixed them. It is correct that DAT 2 had some mixes dated earlier than DAT 1. The red circle indicates the version used on the final album.

There are slight differences between each mix of a song, because these were rundown in real time off the 8-track tape, controlling the midi to the synths. No two mixes are exactly the same, though they are similar with very mild “problems” that caused me to want to mix again. Don’t mistake the quantity of mixes here with how many times I mixed each track. Most of the time, I’d run it, record it, but not like it enough to keep it, and then record over what I just did.

The one completely unheard thing is the acoustic mix of “Pandora’s Box” (tracks 12+13)

Today I added slight compression to boost the levels, and slight EQ to remove some of the shrill caused by the in-box digital compression.

What do you think?
